Retrospect on the 25th German Prevention Congress

The 25th anniversary of the DPT German Prevention Congress took place on 28 and 29 September, digitally for the first time. The topic of the Congress was "Smart Prevention - Prevention in the Digital World".

Due to COVID-19 and the measures placed to contain the spread, the Annual International Forum (AIF) was unfortunately cancelled. The original programme of the congress had to be transformed into a digital format. In a short video the Making of and some impressions of this début are compiled.

This digital congress consisted of the following four parts:

  • DPT-TV, through this a prevention programme was aired for the duration of two days. Moderated by the DPT Managing Director, Erich Marks, it consisted of interviews, discussions, music, films, online seminars and much more. Videos of the DPT-partner institutions provided insights into the DPT exhibition.
  • A total of 14 German-language online seminars were recorded and can be accessed via YouTube.
  • The DPT-Infopool was an alternative to the usual information booths at the DPT exhibition. Actors and institutions had the opportunity to upload various materials in a digital info pool and present themselves.
  • An Open-House with a Meet and Greet; this digital opportunity allowed for informal gettogethers and networking in the evening.

Furthermore, DPT created a Congress Expertise with the views of 17 experts on the main topic. The entire report is also available in English and all 68 video statements are subtitled in English.

Around 1,500 people registered for this online congress, despite registration not being mandatory to participate in the various formats of the congress. The entire event was recorded and is available on the DPT's YouTube channel. Some parts of the programme were simultaneously translated into English. These recordings are also available on YouTube: The opening of the congress, the panel discussion on the main topic, a live hack on the question "How can I protect myself against cyberattacks?" and the closing event which includes the prevention speech on the topic "School on the move" and the Kassel Declaration, in which DPT calls for strategic action in smart prevention.

The 14 online seminars, which can also be viewed online, were very well attended and had between 50 and 300 registered participants. In the info pool, various actors and institutions uploaded and posted more than 1,200 materials (e.g. videos, pdfs, links, photos, audio files, etc.). The DPTInfopool also includes a section on the International Forum; here the English language uploads have been posted. You can also find an interesting Best Of Annual International Forum of the last years of the DPT Congress on YouTube.

As all recorded aspects of the event are available on DPT- YouTube; this means the contents of the congress are accessible to everyone and, above all, are available for the long-term. It is therefore difficult to evaluate the total number of people who have watched the DPT-Digital during the event and afterwards as this information is not available as a statistical daily or weekly breakdown. However, the number of views on the YouTube channel is increasing overall.

The EU Horizon2020 CCI project also had the opportunity to present itself. On the afternoon of 28 September, for example, DPT-TV broadcast a short version of the online seminar on CCI which showed Dr Anke Schröder (LKA) and Maximilian Querbach (LKA) giving a lecture on the project on 30 June 2020. After broadcasting this, the Managing Director of DPT, Erich Marks, conducted a 30-minute interview with Anke Schröder (LKA). During the late-night programming of DPT-TV, the recordings of both online seminars, which CCI partners had already run with the DPT in the past, were broadcast again in full length.1

The CCI project was also represented in the DPT-Infopool. The abstract of the originally planned lecture on "Smart Prevention: Turning the Promise into Practice" by Prof. Caroline L. Davey and Andrew B. Wootton was posted. In addition, a link to the CCI project website and the CCI factsheets were posted, so people can find more in-depth information.

In summary, the congress scored well in the evaluation; we have received positive feedback and are very satisfied with this first digital DPT. We are now preparing for the next congress, which will take place from 10 – 11 May 2021, and we look forward again to the diverse participation of the CCI project and the CCI project partners.
