03 Crime Prevention through Urban Design and Planning (CP-UDP)

CP-UDP incorporates evidence-based design, planning and management measures within urban development proposals to prevent crime and reduce feelings of insecurity. CP-UDP seeks to embed protective physical features and encourage pro-social behaviours through the design of a location. CP-UDP advice is often delivered by staff working for LEAs or local authorities.

04 Measuring and mitigating citizens' feelings of insecurity

Increased feelings of insecurity are a serious consequence of high-impact petty crime, so measuring and mitigating citizens’ feelings of insecurity is a key consideration for LEAs and policymakers. Feelings of insecurity are not necessarily caused by victimization, but by a range of other factors—including situational factors.

Perception Matters

Website

Principles common to all four areas of research and Toolkit development are:

01
Partnership working
02
Focus on prevention through different means
03
Practical consideration of citizens' feelings of security
04
Understanding and addressing ethical concerns

CCI Project supported LEAs

CCI supported LEAs in researching and innovating practical, evidence-based tools that meet end-users needs and operational contexts. By considering the ethical, legal and social issues throughout the project’s research and innovation activities resulted in Toolkits that help to promote safe and secure towns and cities, without compromising fundamental human rights.

All toolkits were demonstrated in an operational setting to assess performance, and materials developed to support integration into LEA operations and foster wider implementation.
